Company History

Pine & Baker - Instrumental in Audio History

No history of the audio industry is complete without mentioning Pine & Baker Corp. Although they are not audio experts, they were instrumental in helping to bring high-fidelity audio equipment to the masses. Pine & Baker originally produced fine furniture, and moved into the production of high-quality wooden speaker enclosures for companies like Acoustic Research, KLH, Advent, and Bose Corporation. In some cases P&B provided these audio giants with a line of credit during their first years in business to help them get on their feet.

In the early days, Acoustic Research and Pine & Baker were located in the same building in Lechmere Square in Cambridge, Mass. Shipping was simply done on carts through an adjoining fire door.

Company Formation

Theodore (Ted) Baker formed the company in 1940 with Andrew Pine (Piney). When Piney passed away in 1946, Ted bought his share of the company from Piney's wife. Ted grew the business with the help of his brothers and sister - as well as a number of the younger generation.

The Big Move - Our Own Building

In 1981 the company bought it's own buliding in Medford at 550 Boston Ave. Just down the hill from Tufts University. Over time, Tufts became a customer as well as a tenant.

New Management - Phil Takes Over!

Ted's son Phil has worked at the family business for over 40 years, and slowley took over the reins.

The Second Move - Out of the City

In 2006 the company moved to it's current location at 166 Lorum Street in Tewksbury. The new location is larger and provides better access to the distribution infrastructure. Unfortunately, Ted died the same year and did not get to see the new facility. See the Lowell Sun story.
